Idesco's Cardea passive RFID technology presented the lowest energy requirements

Idesco's Cardea reader has proven an outstanding performer in Finland's Electric RaceAbout sportscar immobiliser system. An electric sportscar jointly developed by Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Lappeenranta University of Technology, Electric RaceAbout (E-RA) is a full-featured, albeit electric, sportscar boasting emission-free low energy consumption. Notably, it has proven successful in a variety of events focusing on advanced and sustainable road mobility technology.

The internationally competing vehicle's immobiliser security system was designed around passive RFID technology. The design team specifically chose Idesco's Cardea reader for securing their vehicle because, while simultaneously user-friendly and deep-secure, Cardea's passive RFID technology also presented, by far, the lowest energy requirements. Connected as a standalone reader to the vehicle, Cardea provides a totally independent lock control system. Possessing transponder data in its internal memory, the instrument panel-embedded Cardea Reader only activates the vehicle when an authorised transponder is inserted into its dedicated slot. The design team then capitalised on the Cardea Reader's two FET outputs to administer whether full or half power driving was allowed, depending on the identity of the inserted transponder.

Mr. Sami Ruotsalainen, E-RA's project leader, states that Idesco's Cardea reader has proven to be the perfect choice for securing his team's cutting-edge technology vehicle. "Our experience with the reader has been very positive", says Ruotsalainen. "Implementing the system was very easy and the reader has proven to be effectively bombproof in our car."
