  • Sick and tired of thieves helping themselves to your stock?
  • Need a ‘sure-fire' way of keeping your plants secure after hours?

Rick Currin, Manager of Mitre 10 Dinsdale in Hamilton, New Zealand has taken a proactive approach to securing plants and stock.  To maximise site security Rick installed a PowerFence™ system  from Gallagher Security Management Systems along his garden centre perimeter wall.

Since installation, four and a half years ago, Rick reports that the PowerFence™ system has been an excellent deterrent to thieves.

"‘Touch wood', we haven't had a single successful breach of our perimeter wall since the system was installed.  It's extremely reliable, low maintenance and doesn't false alarm due to adverse weather conditions or interference from birds" comments Rick.

"There have been a few attempted thefts, but the only evidence of them was some broken trellis...obviously the attackers were ‘greeted' by short, sharp shock which encouraged a hasty retreat", says Rick.

The system is effective and, without a doubt, safe, meeting both New Zealand and international safety standards.

Mitre 10 Dinsdale needed a perimeter solution to meet a number of challenges.

The system had to:

  • actively deter and detect intruders while welcome customers
  • be a flexible, visually unobtrusive, slimline perimeter solution
  • be safe, allowing staff to get on with their work and customers to shop while keeping intruders out.

So what is a Gallagher PowerFence™ and why did Rick choose one for his site?

The PowerFence™ system consists of a grid of high tensile wires that can be constructed either inside an existing perimeter fence, or on walls or roofs.  Warning signs are positioned along the fence, providing warning of the hazard of an electric shock if the fence is touched or breached.

The key feature of a Security PowerFence™ that appealed to Rick is its ability to deter would-be intruders.

While most technologies only detect intruders, the PowerFence™ system is unique in its ability to also deter attackers.  The security fence is pulsed every 1.2 seconds with an electric pulse generated by an energiser.

Rick customised his PowerFence™ to include an extra wire which runs inside the trellis wall, below the main grid of wires.  This has proven particularly effective in deterring intruders.

In addition, the PowerFence™ tips from its up-right position if grabbed, and unique breakaway insulators will snap if an intruder tries to scale the fence.  These features make it very difficult for anyone to leverage off the PowerFence™ and climb over the top.

Mitre 10 Dinsdale's PowerFence™ system links into the company's existing alarm systems and security technology, such as CCTV, for seamless site security.  If an intruder attacks the fence, Mitre 10's guard company, Waikato Security, is able to respond to the attack immediately.

Rick wouldn't be without the system, "I rest easy in the knowledge that our stock is secure and our losses are minimised."
