New Fujitsu Solution offers Industry-Leading Biometrics Authentication Technology for High- Security applications in Global Markets

Fujitsu Europe Limited, one of the world's leading suppliers of hard disk drives and computer peripherals and a market leader in document management scanners, today announced the arrival of its new ‘contactless' palm vein authentication device to the EMEA market as part of Fujitsu´s global launch.  With this unique device, Fujitsu is striving to meet the growing need for advanced biometric security devices.  The company aims to promote its advanced-security palm vein authentication technology with the goal of creating a de-facto standard in high-security markets.

How does it work?

Fujitsu's palm vein device captures an individual's palm image with near-infrared rays.  The deoxidized hemoglobin in the palm vein absorbs these rays, thereby reducing the reflection rate and causing the veins to appear as a black pattern.  This vein pattern is then verified against the pre-registered pattern to authenticate the individual.  As the veins are internal in the body and have a wealth of differentiating features, assuming false identity through forgery is extremely difficult, thereby enabling an extremely high level of security (*1).  The compact size scanner measures just 7 x 7 x 2.7 cm, weighs less than 90 grams and comes with a USB 2.0 interface.

Fujitsu's palm vein device is only able to recognize the pattern if hemoglobin is actively flowing through the person's veins.  Additionally, research by Fujitsu indicates that each individual's palm vein pattern is unique, even in the case of identical twins.  The combination of these factors give Fujitsu's palm vein scanning solution an edge over competing biometric identification products.

In addition to providing outstanding security, Fujitsu's palm vein sensory technology is extremely user-friendly, creating a touch-free, hygienic solution necessary for public use.  The user simply places the palm of the hand above the reader, and the machine does all the work.

"This is an important announcement for Fujitsu as it marks our first foray into the EMEA biometrics market," said Thomas Bengs, Palm Vein Product Manager of the Fujitsu Europe Limited.  "This technology will experience dramatic growth in the coming years as organizations implement improvements in IT and infrastructure security.  The value proposition that palm vein technology offers is resonating well with users, and we are very excited to put a new biometric identification system on the market that can meet growing customer needs."

Fujitsu's palm vein authentication technology is based on more than two decades of image recognition experience.  The company decided to aggressively pursue this because the biometrics security industry is expected to have dramatic adoption growth in the near future.

Applications for the Fujitsu palm vein technology are vast and span several vertical markets, including security, financial/banking, access control, healthcare and government applications.  Several Fujitsu customers have already experienced great success using the palm vein device for the following applications: identification purposes in financial institutions; access control for high-security areas; and customer and employee identification.

The palm vein device comes bundled with library software and is intended for systems integration in security-related solutions.  First units are scheduled for shipment in August 2005.  Prices for OEMs and systems integrators are under review.  From September 2005, Fujitsu will be able to ship the palm vein with mPollux software for high-level security system-login.  With mPollux, developed by FSOY in Finland, Fujitsu can offer a complete solution even for Value Added Resellers and Systems Integrators.
