SALTO access control solution - E2000 chosen to secure Merton college

SALTO Systems has been selected by Merton College Oxford to provide advanced access control management within their new Finlay Building administration centre.

Merton College is one of the 38 independent Colleges and Halls that work within the University of Oxford.  Founded in 1264, it is one of the oldest colleges in Oxford and has just over 300 undergraduate and over 250 graduate students in residence at any time.

The College has added and extended to its campus over much of its history and the latest addition to its facilities is the new Finlay Building which has been constructed to house the College's busy administrative centre.

As part of the construction process a security survey was conducted to ascertain what form of security and access control equipment would be needed to ensure only authorised staff could gain admission to the new centre.

Local SALTO Inspired Business Partner Smiths Security carried out the survey and after listening carefully to the Colleges' requirements was able to recommend a complete solution utilizing products from the leading manufacturer and supplier of access control equipment within the education sector, SALTO Systems.

Darren Bryan, Colleges Manager at Smiths Security, said:  "‘With several other Colleges at the University already using SALTO for their access control requirements we wanted to provide continuity of security protection across the site and so decided to install E2000 read-write comfort range electronic locks in satin stainless steel to the internal doors within the building, integrating them with the architect specified access control system already fitted in the College."

The SALTO E2000 series is a stand alone access control system that is controlled via a read-write i-Button system where access information is recorded and stored in the lock and in the ID carriers, the i-Button keys. This allows the College to programme keys to allow access to certain rooms or areas within the administration centre for specific periods only if required with the doors automatically locking at pre-specified times.

One of the other main requirements of the system was that staff in the administration centre also wanted to be able to reduce the time needed to manage their access control system without any loss of flexibility, control or security.  This was achieved this by allowing the stand-alone locks to read and receive information via the read-write i-Button system.

Since most user related access information is stored in an encrypted format on the ID carrier, this eliminates the physical restrictions of traditional stand alone electronic locks and allows both the i-Buttons and locks to be updated, restricted or deleted at will.  This means that that the College will not have the worry or cost of changing lock cylinders, but will now have the ability to instantly cancel out i-Button fobs from their security system if staff do lose them or they are stolen."

The E2000 series is ideal for applications in buildings such as Finlay in which a restricted but numerous group of people have access to a designated group of doors.  The ability to create different levels of security and the management of access flow and user access time zones, together with the option of downloading door audit trails, are all key elements to this kind of installation.
